ProActive Benefits

Security of Data

Physical security of hardware and software infrastructure are provided through:

  • 24X7 monitoring of building and environmental alarms by a local staff as well as a centralized Network Operations Center
  • Closed-circuit cameras
  • 24-hour guards and physical location monitoring
  • Biometric scanners and secure card-key access
  • 'Man-trap' restricted access to the data centers
  • Locked cages enclosing all equipment
  • 24x7 dedicated/prevention systems ensure network perimeter remains secure

Logical security, at incremental levels, is provided to schools as required. The first level of logical security is through User Authentication and SSL Security. SSL, short for Secure Lockets Layer, a protocol developed by Netscape for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data - a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. Many Web sites use this protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. User Authentication is accomplished through a secure User ID and password along with roles based data access within the ProActive services architecture. Beyond the first level of logical security are:

  • level 2- which utilizes an encrypted USB key device requiring further authentication before a user can enter level 1,
  • level 3 - which requires entry of random keys displayed on the USB key device beyond level 2,
  • level 4 - requiring that the user logon only from devices that hardware has physically been registered with ProActive services beyond level 3, and at
  • level 5 - which is locking down access to a specific PC on a specific network along with Level 4 functionality.

It is up to the client to determine the level of security required. Most opt for level 1, provided that, each Student and Staff transaction is stored and reportable allowing the school to audit any data changes that take place.
